Daisy May Barnes
was born on July 5, 1889 in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas. One
of three children born to Benjamin Franklin Edward Barnes
and Sarah Catherine Clark. On July 16, 1907 Daisy married
Charles Coverstone in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois.
Charles and Daisy would be the parents of two daughters. Daisy
was widowed before September 5, 1914 when she married Herschal
Francis French in Charleston, Coles
County, Illinois. Daisy and Herschal were the parents of three
boys and three girls including one set of twins. Daisy and Herschel
would reside at 2505 Dewitt Avenue in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. Daisy died at Cunningham
Nursing Home at 10:50 am on February 28, 1972 in Mattoon, Coles
County, Illinois. She was buried on March 1, 1972 in the Lord's
Prayer section of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Lafayette, Coles
County, Illinois. Her tombstone reads "Daisy M. French 1889-1972".
Daisy's cause of death was Pulmonary Edema with a secondary cause
of death being Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease and generalized
Arteriosclerosis.
Benjamin Franklin Edward Barnes
was born on July 12, 1846 in Akron, Ohio. He is a veteran of the
Civil War, serving in the 129th Ohio Infantry. Frank obtained
a marriage license on August 24, 1883 issued by L. B. Kellogg,
Probate Judge in Plymouth, Lyon County, Kansas. Frank married
Sarah Catherine Clark on August 25, 1883 in Plymouth, Lyon
County, Kansas. They were married by J. W. B. Hewitt, Justice
of the Peace in his office. The license was filed September 25,1883.
Frank died on April 14, 1936 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois.
His obituary appeared in the Mattoon Journal Gazette on April 15, 1936 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois.
Frank Barnes Dies at Home of Son
Frank Barnes, a former resident of Mattoon, died Tuesday morning
at the home of his son, Bert Barnes, eight miles southwest of
Shelbyville, following a long illness due to infirmities of age.
He was bedfast four weeks. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon
at 1:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maldon Whitley, 3216
Marshall Avenue, in this city, followed by burial in Dodge Grove
cemetery. Rev. S. A. Hughart will officiate. A military burial
service will be held. Mr. Barnes was born July 12, 1846 in Akron,
O. He moved from that city to Plymouth, Kan., in 1880. There he
married Miss Sarah Clark Aug. 18, 1883. Shortly after their marriage
they went to a farm near Chillicothe, Mo., living there until
1906, when they moved to Mattoon, where he had employment as a
Big Four watchman. He continued on the railroad job until 1929,
when he and Mrs. Barnes went to live with their son. Mr. Barnes
is survived by his wife, a son, Bert Barnes, and a daughter, Mrs.
Daisy French of this city.
He was buried on April 16, 1936 in Section
5, Division Q, Row 2, Grave 37 the Veterans Field section of Dodge
Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. Frank's tombstone
reads Franklin E. Barnes Co. H 129 Ohio Inf.
Sarah Catherine Clark was born on
February 21, 1861. On August 25, 1883 B. F. Barnes of Plymouth,
Lyon County, Kansas age 37 and Sadie C. Clark of Plymouth, Lyon
County, Kansas age 22 were married by J.W.B. Hewitt, Justice of
the Peace. Sarah and Frank were the parents of Daisy May, Frank
and Bert. Sarah died on March 9, 1949. She is buried in the Lord's
Prayer section of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Lafayette, Coles
County, Illinois. Her tombstone reads Sarah C. Barnes Feb. 21,1861
- Mar. 9, 1949.
