Laura Hines was born
on February 1, 1818 in Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. Laura
was one of a dozen children born to Thomas Hines and Sarah
Arnold. Laura married James Streeter on September 7,
1835 in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont, Addison Brown officiating.
Laura and James were the parents of James Henry, L. Ellen, Frederick
Franklin, Milia Ann, and Sarah Francina. Laura was a member of
the Brattleboro Baptist Church. Laura appears on the census in
1850 in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont, she is listed in
the house of James Streeter. A widowed Laura married second Hiram
Gore in Brattleboro, Windham County,
Vermont in late 1859 or early 1860. Laura appears on the census
on July 17, 1860 in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio with her new
husband Hiram. A widowed Laura is found in the 1880 census in
Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. She is ill with a tumor and
her grandaughter, Minnie S. Streeter, is boarding with her. Laura
died of Pneumonia on November 16 or 17, 1884 in Brattleboro, Windham
County, Vermont. She was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro,
Windham County, Vermont and her tombstone inscription reads "
Laura Hines. Wife of James Streeter & Hiram Gore. Passed to
the higher life. Nov. 17, 1884. Ae. 66 yrs. 5 ms." On the
top of her tombstone is a carving of a bundle of wheat.
Thomas
Hines was born on April 7, 1780 in Guilford, Windham County,
Vermont. Thomas was one of three sons born to William Hines
and an unknown mother. Thomas married Sarah Arnold on July
6, 1800. Thomas and Sarah were the parents of five sons and seven
daughters, of those we know the names of seven: Arnold J., Laura,
Emily J., Isaac, Lydia, Mila Ann and William. At some point before
1833 the family moved to Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont,
where Thomas was a millwright working as an assistant to Deacon
John Holbrook in his milling operations. Thomas died on April
20, 1869 in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont.
Sarah Arnold was born in
Rhode Island. The Annals of Brattleboro state that Sarah is a
descendant of Thomas Arnold of Providence, Rhode Island, and she
is also rumored to be a descendant of Roger Williams, the founder
of Rhode Island. Sarah died on October 22, 1865.
William
Hines was the son of William Hines and an unknown mother.
William and an unknown woman were the parents of Thomas, William
and John. William resided in Monroe, Massachusetts, but moved
to Guilford, Vermont before his son Thomas was born in 1780.
William
Hines lived in Rhode Island. William and an unknown woman
were the parents of William.
