OWEN GENEALOGY

Maternal Maternal Line

Owen is a surname that can be traced to Wales. Welsh naming practices are difficult to understand and even worse to track. I have done my best with this line that makes matters worse by marrying one Owen to another.


Elizabeth Owen was born in 1722 or 1723. She is the daughter of John Owen and Hannah Maris. Elizabeth married James Rhodes at the Darby Meeting in Delaware County, Pennsylvania on June 22, 1745. Elizabeth and James were the parents of Hannah, Joseph, Susanna, Rebecca, Henry, Owen, Tacy, James and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died on May 5, 1795.
John Owen was born on February 26, 1692 in Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was one of nine children born to Robert Owen and Rebecca Owen. John married Hannah Maris on October 22, 1719 at the Chester Monthly Meeting of Friends in Chester, Pennsylvania. John and Hannah were the parents of Jane, George, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Susannah. John was High Sheriff for the county of Chester, fourth October, 1729-31; 3d Oct, 1735-37; 4th Oct 1743-45; 8th Oct., 1749-51. He was elected a member of the Provincial Capital Assembly of Pennsylvania at different times between 1733 and 1748; he was collecter of excise for Chester, 1733-37, and for many years one of the trustees of the Loan Office of Pennyslvania. John died in January 1752 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Robert Owen was born about 1657 in Fron Goch, Merionethshire, Wales. He was one of five children born to Owen Ap Evan and Gainor John. Robert married Rebecca Owen on March 11, 1678 in Fron Goch, Merionethshire, Wales. Robert and Rebecca were the parents of Gainor, Evan, Jane, Elizabeth, Jane, Owen, John, Robert, and Rebecca. In 1690 the family immigrated to Pennsylvania. Robert died on December 8, 1697 in Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was buried on December 10 in the ground of the Merion Friends Meeting in Merion, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Rebecca Owen was born about 1663 in Llwyndu Parish, Montgomeryshire, Wales. She is one of seven children born to Owen Humphrey and Margaret Vaughn. Rebecca died on October 23, 1697 in Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and was buried on October 25.



Robert's line

Owen Ap Evan was born about 1636. He was one of five children born to Evan Robert Lewis and Jane unknown last name. Owen married Gainor John and they were the parents of Robert, Owen, Evan, Jane and Ellin, all with the surname of Owen. Owen died before January 6, 1678 in Fron Goch, Wales.

Gainor John was christened on September 13, 1629 at Llandderfel Church in Wales. She is the daughter of John Lloyd and an unknown mother. Gainor died on December 14, 1678 and was at Llanfor Church in Wales.


Evan Robert Lewis was born about 1585 in Parish of Ysputty-Ievan, Denbighshire, Wales. He was one of twelve children born to Robert Lewis and Gwervyl unknown last name. Evan married Jane unknown last name and they were the parents of Owen, John, Cadwallader, Griffith and Evan, all with the surname of Ap Evan. Evan died about 1662 in Fron Goch, Parish of Llandderfel, Comot of Penllyn, Merionethshire, Wales.
Robert Lewis was born about 1555. Robert married Gwervyl unknown last name and they were the parents of Evan Robert, Cadwallader, Thomas, John, Hugh, Humphrey, Lowry, Margaret, Jane, Catharine, Ellen and Margaret, all with the surname of Lewis. Robert died on February 14, 1645.

Gwervyl unknown last name was the daughter of Llewelyn Ap David.



Rebecca's line

Owen Humphrey was born about 1625. He was one of four children born to Humphrey Ap Hugh and Elizabeth unknown last name. Owen married Margaret Vaughn and they were the parents of Rebecca, Humphrey, John, Rowland, Joshua, Owen and Elizabeth, all with the surname of Owen. Owen was an officer under Oliver Cromwell; served as a Justice of the Peace for Merionethshire under the Protectorate. He was amongst the first in Wales to join the Quakers, and his name is of very frequent occurrence in Besse's "Sufferings of Friends". He left little personal estate due to his fines for religious persecution. His ancestral home was at Llwyn-du, in Llwyn Gwrill, in Merionethshire Co, Wales. Owen died before 1699.

Humphrey Ap Hugh married Elizabeth unknown last name. Humphrey and Elizabeth were the parents of Owen, John, Samuel and Anne all with the surname of Humphrey.
