Leslie Irene Ross
was born on October 4, 1888 in Casey, Clark County, Illinois.
One of four children born to Silas E. Ross and Sarah
Elizabeth Gilbert. Leslie married
Charles David Breeze on October
6, 1905 in Yale, Oklahoma. They would be the parents of five sons
and one daughter. By 1917 the family was in
Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. In
1925 Leslie was widowed and went to work to support the family.
According to her application for a social security number in December
1936 she was employed by Brown Shoe Company on North 15th Street
in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. At the time of her death she
was employed as a hotel clerk. While living in Mattoon, Coles
County, Illinois, she would reside at 916 DeWitt Avenue in 1925
and 1912 1/2 Wabash Avenue in 1936 and 1702 1/2 Lafayette in 1959.

Mrs. Leslie Breeze Dies In Indiana
Mrs. Leslie Irene Breeze, 71, of 1702 1/2 Lafayette, a lifelong
resident of Mattoon area, died at 9 a.m. today at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Dorthy Beldon, Logansport, Ind., where she
had been visiting during the past two months. The body will be
at the Schilling funeral home where funeral arrangements will
be made. Mrs. Breeze, the widow of C. D. Breeze, was the former
Leslie Irene Ross, a direct descendant of Betsy Ross who, according
to legend, fashioned the first American flag. Mrs. Breeze was
born in Casey. Surviving are the sons, Charles, Mattoon; William,
Fort Myers, Fla.; Paul, Corpus Christi, Tex.; Garland, Dallas,
Tex.; and Beryle, Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Mrs. Beldon of
Logansport; brothers, Dick, Yale, Okla. and Josh, also residing
in Oklahoma; ten grandchildren.
A funeral notice for Leslie was in the Mattoon Journal Gazette on September 22, 1959 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois.
Conduct Last Rites for Mrs. Breeze, 71
Funeral services where conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at the Schilling
funeral home for Mrs. Leslie Irene Breeze, 71 of Mattoon. Rev.
Vernon D. Miller officiated, and burial was in Dodge Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Carroll Faris sang, "In the Garden," accompanied
at the organ by Mrs. Florence J. Myers. Pallbearers were Kenneth
Kilman, Myron Hopper, Orrison Timmons, Josseph McKleroy, Lynn
Shaw and Emil Kovacik. Mrs. Breeze died about 9 a.m. Friday at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Beldon, Logansport, Ind.
Leslie died on September 18, 1959 in Logansport,
Cass County, Indiana. She was buried on September 22, 1959 in
Section 13, Div. E, Lot 18 in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, Coles
County, Illinois. Her tombstone inscription reads Leslie I Breeze
Oct. 4, 1888 - Sept. 18, 1959. According to her death certificate
Leslie died at the Logansport State Hospital at 7:30am cst as
a result of a Cerebral Hemorrhage. Contributing cause to her death
was bronchopneumonia. Other significant conditions were CBS a/w
CAS.
Silas E. Ross was born in Ohio, one
of six children born to Osmore L. Ross and Jerusha L.
Burnet. Silas was a carpenter. He
was married to Sarah Elizabeth Gilbert.
They were the parents of William Gilbert, Leslie Irene, Josh and
Ernest Walter. At some point the family lived in Yale, Oklahoma.
About 1909, Silas was hauling items in a wagon and a stove fell
out and landed on him, he died shortly thereafter.
Osmore
L. Ross was a child of Frederick Rees Ross and Sally
Bickford. On April 14, 1839 Osmore
married Jerusha L. Burnet in
Clermont County, Ohio. Osmore and Jerusha were the parents of
Silas E., Joshua, Mattie (Nel), Hannah, Frances Catherine and
Mary.
Frederick Rees Ross was born on August
3, 1792 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. The child of
Adam Ross and Elizabeth Ramsdell. Frederick served
in the War of 1812. He was married to Sally Bickford
on January 31, 1815 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. Frederick
and Sally were the parents of Osmore.
Adam Ross
was born in 1752. He served in the Revolutionary War at the Battle
of Bunker Hill. In June of 1781 Adam married Elizabeth Ramsdell. Adam and Elizabeth were the parents of Frederick
Rees.
