John and Margaret were the parents of John, Jonathan, Ibrook, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Hannah, Benjamin, Jemima and Samuel, two of the children being my direct ancestors. It is supposed John had no school education as he signed his mark, which looked like a capital T, to the many deeds and conveyances during his life. John had many occupations including that of Yeoman, waywarden, constable and in 1665 he was on an important town committee to lay out highways, with very full powers. In 1644 John was inprisoned for denying the authority of the court over a military situation involving the appointment of a Captain of the military. He was charged with causing a disturbance by the testimony he gave in the church, and by his contempt of authority in refusing to give bond for his appearance, and for signing the petition bringing charges against the deputy governor. In a deed dated May 16, 1664 he bought land from Edward Wilder in Hingham extending from what is now Main Street at Cole's Corner to the brook at Tower's Bridge, and soon afterward built a house on it. Three of his sons built homes on this lot also and some of the land remained in the possession of descendants for a long time. In 1675, at the start of King Phillip's War John petitioned the town of Hingham to allow his family to stay at his fortified home rather than move to the fort. The town allowed him to stay and in his home he sheltered himself, his wife and seven children including, John with wife Sarah and infant son Benjamin, son Ibrook with wife Margaret and children Richard, Daniel, John, and Rachel; son Jeremiah with wife Elizabeth and children Jeremiah and Mary; daughter Hannah with son Joseph Cowell and unmarried children Benjamin, Jemima and Samuel. John died on February 13, 1702 in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He died intestate having deeded land to his children, and thus in part settled his own estate.
