Rosa Ann TuckerRosa Ann Tucker was born on September 16, 1872 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio. Rosa was the eldest daughter born to William Tucker and Elizabeth Mender. She first appears on the census on June 7, 1880 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio, she was seven prior to June 1,1880 and attended school during the census year. On June 23, 1892 Rosa and Charles H. Garner were married by W.A. Roush, M.G. in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio. Rosa and Charles were the parents of Emma Mae and Florence Charlean, the second daughter born after Charles' death in 1897. On May 5, 1903 Rosa married William F. Powell in Athens County, Ohio. Rosa and William were married by F.L. Lowe, minister, this was the second marriage for both. Rosa and William had Gerard Cliftin and Donald Wilbert. Shortly before the birth of her first son several legal documents were filed in Athens County, Ohio by Rosa with respect to her daughters from her marriage to Charles Garner.

Guardian's Bond on April 4, 1905 in Athens County, Ohio.

We, Rosa A. Powell, W. F. Powell, and Clarance Tucker hereby acknowledge ourselves to be indebted to the State of Ohio, in the penal sum of one hundred dollars, to the payment of which we jointly and severally [individually] bind ourselves. Witness, our hands and seals, this 4th day of April A.D. 1905. The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That whereas, the said Rosa A. Powell has this day been appointed by the Probate Court of Athens County, in the State of Ohio, Guardian of Emma M. Garner and Florance C. Garner minors and legal representative of Charles Garner late of said County, deceased. Now, if the said Guardian shall discharge, with fidelity, the trust reposed in her as aforesaid; shall render an accurate statement of her transactions, with a just account of the profits arising and accruing from the real and personal Estate of her said wards; and shall deliver up the same to the Court when thereunto required; then this obligation to be void, otherwise in full force and virtue. Attest: Rosa A. Powell, W.F. Powell, Clarence R. Tucker. This bond approved in open Court, this 4th day of April 1905 A. W. Lynch Probate Judge. The State of Ohio, Athens County, ss. I, Rosa A. The State of Ohio, Athens County, ss. William F. Powell one of the sureties on the bond of Rosa A. Powell as Guardian of E. M. Garner and Florence C. Garner being duly sworn says that he is a resident of Athens County, Ohio; that he is worth beyond the amount of all his debts at least double the penalty of the within bond one hundred and that she has real estate liable to execution in the State of Ohio amounting in actual value at least to the sum of ____ Dollars, beyond the amount of all his debts, legal exemptions and liabilites as surety or otherwise. Application for Appointment of Guardian. Probate Court of Athens County, Ohio. April 4th A.D. 1905
In the Matter of Minor Heir of Charles Garner deceased, Application for Appointment of Guardian. The undersigned Rosa Powell a resident of Nelsonville County, Ohio, and whose Post Office address is Nelsonville Ohio, and who is the mother of said minors hereby makes application for the Guardianship of Emma M. Garner aged 12 years, Jan 2nd 1905; Florance C. Garner aged 7 years, Aug 8th 1904 minors and heir of Charles Garner deceased; and being duly sworn, says that said minor is resident Athens County, aforesaid, and that the condition, situation and amount of all the property of said minor heir, as he verily believes is as follows, to-wit: Personal Estate, consisting of one hundred dollars cash. The following freeholders are offered as sureties: Rosa A. Powell (signature of applicant) P.O. Address Nelsonville O.

Guardian's Letters on April 4, 1905 in Athens County, Ohio.

The State of Ohio, Athens County ss. To all Persons to whom Presents shall come - Greeting: Know Ye, That the Probate Court within and for the said County, doth hereby grant the Guardianship of Emma M. Garner, and Florence C. Garner minor children of Charles Garner late of said County, deceased, unto Rosa A. Powell who is hereby fully empowered and authorized to do and perform all and singular the duties appertaining to said appointment; the said Guardian having given bond according to law, and in all respects complied with the requisitions of the statutes, in such case made and provided. In testimony whereof, the seal of said Court is hereunto affixed. Witness A.W. Lynch, Judge of said Court, this 4th day of April 1905. [signed] A.W. Lynch Probate Judge. The bill for being appointed Guardian was $5.91.

Rosa died at 8:00 am on October 3, 1919 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio. Her cause of death was Carcinoma of the Uterus. Dr. W.E. Howe treated her from October 2, 1918 to October 3, 1919. Rosa had been ill for three years.

Her obituary appeared in the Athens Messenger on October 4, 1919 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio.

Mrs. Rose Powell aged 47 years, wife of Will Powell died at her home Friday after an illness of many months. Mrs. Powell is well known in this city, was a member of the Pythian Sisters which order will have charge of her funeral, tomorrow at the residence at 1:30 o'clock. Mrs. Powell is survived by two daughters by a former marriage and two sons.

She was buried on October 5, 1919 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio.


William Tucker was born on April 17, 1848 in England, the son of John Tucker and an unknown mother. William immigrated to the United States circa 1866. William was married to Elizabeth Mender by William Young L.E on March 5, 1871 in Athens County, Ohio. William and Elizabeth were the parents of William, Rosa Ann, Mary, Edward, Clarence R., Elizabeth, Lucy, Garnet and John. According to the 1880 Federal Census for Athens County, Ohio, he was 32 prior to June 1, 1880, a married coal miner with both parents born in England. Residing with William, in the area called Tangletown, were his wife Elizabeth, sons William and Edward and daughters Rose Ann and Mary. According to the 1900 census of Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio, William is a naturalized citizen who has lived in the United States for 33 years. He owns a mortgaged house on Adams Street, has been unemployed for the entire census year and is able to read but unable to write. Residing with William in this census are his wife Elizabeth, his son Edward and his daughters Lucy and Garnet. William died at 1 pm on October 31, 1924 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio. His cause of death was Cardial Asthma (non-tubercular), with a contributing factor of Organic Heart Disease which he had for the last two to three years.

Aged Man Is Taken By Death

Mr. William Tucker, 74 years and who for fifty-five years had made Nelsonville his home, passed away Friday at his home on Adams street, just seventeen months after the death of his wife. During his long residence here and by his fine character he gained the respect and esteem of all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at the late residence Monday at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Howearth. He leaves five children, three daughters, Mrs. G. S. Fain of Akron, O., Mrs. Arthur Wallace and Mrs. Will Powell of Nelsonville and two sons Ed at home and Clarence of Blackwell, Okla. Mr. Tucker the first sexton of Greenlawn cemetery.

William was buried on November 3, 1924 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio.


John Tucker was born in England. He and an unknown woman were the parents of William.
