Tabitha Vail
was born between 1660 and 1663. She was one of four children born
to Jeremiah Vail and Mary Folger.
About 1683 Tabitha married Henry Case
and they were the parents of Hannah, Henry, Samuel, Tabitha, Benjamin,
Mary and Daniel. Tabitha died on December 16, 1735 in Southold,
Long Island, New York.
Jeremiah Vail was
born about 1618 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. About 1644
he immigrated to Massachusetts. Jeremiah married first Catherine
unknown last name and they were the parents of Abigail, Sarah
and Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a Blacksmith. In 1651 he moved to Gardiners
Island and took charge, with Anthony Waters, of the farm
of Lieutenant Lion Gardiner. From 1653 to 1655 he superintended
the farmwork on Gardiners Island. On February 12, 1655 the town
of Easthampton granted Jeremiah a lot of land and he lived there
with his family until 1659 when he moved to Southold. Jeremiah
married Mary Folger, the widow
of Peter Paine on May 24, 1660 in Southold, Long Island,
New York. Jeremiah and Mary were the parents of Tabitha, John,
Daniel and Mary. In 1662, when Southold, with fifteen other Long
Island towns, was brought under the jurisdiction of Connecticut,
Jeremiah was one of thirty-two signers of a letter which was submitted
to the authorities at Hartford, appointing Colonel John Youngs
as their deputy from Southold. At the same time Jeremiah was one
of twenty-six citizens of Southold who were made Freemen of Connecticut.
In 1675 he was assessed for three men, ten acres of land, fifteen
head of cattle, a horse, twelve sheep, and other property, at
152 pounds. In 1676 he held about 500 acres of land in Southold.
Before December 4, 1685 Jeremiah married Joyce unknown
last name. In 1686 his household consisted of four males and two
females. Jeremiah died before October
19, 1687 in Southold, Long Island, New York.
His will:
To his son John he gave his dwelling house,
certain lands and a right of commonage, with all his household
goods and movables. It also mentions his wife Joyce to whom he
left her third during her life and son Daniel.
